Carlson’s Llovable Llamas has 97 llamas on its farm which makes it one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, llama farm in the country. 4H members of the surrounding area are key to making this place run and we were lucky enough to get shown around by 4H member Lauren, one of the 120 4H-ers who lease llamas throughout the year! She introduced us to the llamas where we gave them endless hugs and kisses! Seeing the love she had for these animals was so fun!

See baby llamas

Llamas have their babies in the spring/summer and are carried for 11.5 months before they are born. With so many llamas at Carlson’s, there’s always going to be some babies around! We also learned that llamas are able to choose the day they give birth and always wait for a nice day. How crazy is that?? The baby llamas are so adorable – perfect for little kids to see!

Take a llama on a walk

One of my favorite parts of the morning was choosing a llama to take on a walk. Llamas are some of the most calm and easygoing animals I’ve ever encountered. They were really easy to lead on the walk around the pasture. So fun!

Learn all about llamas (and how they’re different from alpacas)

My main two questions going into this were “what’s the difference between a llama and an alpaca?” and “will these llamas spit on me?” Both of these questions were answered, and we learned so much more! I won’t ruin it for you, but there is one alpaca on site so we were able to see the differences between the two in person. We also learned that llamas DO spit, but only when they are agitated. These llamas are in a happy, healthy environment, so the chances they will spit on you are slim to none.

Take part in special events

In order to visit the llama farm, just call the number on their website to book some time. There aren’t any consistent visiting hours, but it was super easy to call and get time set up at the last minute. If you want to do more than a quick visit, they also host birthday parties and do fun events in the summer, like llama yoga!

Take home a souvenir

One of the llamas on the farm was in an eHarmony commercial and another was in a Doritos commercial. My pictures with them will always be prized souvenirs, but if you want something more than that, step into the little gift shop for some llama goodies. And if you buy some llama fiber, you will get a photo of the llama it came from!

Hopefully this convinced you that you also need to visit Carlson’s Llovable Llamas. It would be a perfect activity with kids or if you are looking for something fun to do with out of town visitors! Or if you just want something fun to do on a Sunday afternoon, like us 😊
