Spend a fall day in Montgomery for less than $35. I’m a sucker for exploring small towns in Minnesota, so when my sister suggested we spend a day in Montgomery MN I easily took her up on the offer. Just an hour south of the twin cities, this small town has so many hidden gems that made for the best girls day and the ultimate mini fall road trip.
How to spend a fall day in Montgomery
Next chapter winery
On the way to Montgomery, MN we made a pit stop at Next Chapter Winery in New Prague, MN. Located on the most picturesque farm, you walk into the red barn to find the tasting room. If you like sweet wines, this is the place for you! I ordered the wine flight with three 2 oz pours for $6. You can’t drink a lot of wine without a snack, so we also shared some hummus for another $6 – we got SO MUCH we couldn’t eat it all!
We sat outside to soak in the sun and one of the last nice days in Minnesota. There was a wedding going on in the event space next door, so we kept seeing glimpses of bridesmaids running around, but other than that you would have never known!
Montgomery Brewing
With a population of 2,900 you wouldn’t expect Montgomery, MN to have much to do, let alone have a craft brewery. Yet here we are! Located in a restored building downtown, this Montgomery Brewing seemed to be the center of activity in town. I couldn’t tell you the amount of people who stopped in to refill growlers. The local support is awesome! The industrial-designed brewery reminded me of some of my favorites in the Twin Cities (there was even a food truck outside!) but transplanted an hour south. I went for the $4 Northside blonde ale – Yum!
Pizzeria 201
What pairs best with beer? Pizza! To continue our self-led eating and drinking tour through Montgomery, MN we walked over to Pizzeria 201 for a late lunch. I don’t know what it is with Montgomery and beautifully restored buildings, but I couldn’t get enough! The front of the menu reads “A good find” and this is so true. We opted to share a medium sweet Italian pizza for $14.50 (my total’s now up to $22 for the day!) and it was delish. It took all my willpower to walk past the gelato on the way out, but I was eying up the bakery across the street!
Franke’s Bakery
Franke’s Bakery is supposed to have the best Kolachys (think: your grandma’s bread rolls with a fruity pie filling) so we had to try it out. I’ve never heard of these before, but when you’re in the Kolachy capital of the world you have to give it a try! No matter how full of Pizza we were J The Kolachys didn’t disappoint (especially for less than $1 a piece) and the other bakery goodies made me want to come back for more.
Montgomery Orchard
You can’t have a fall day Minnesota without a stop at the apple orchard – and the Montgomery Orchard has it all: Apple picking, hay rides, corn maze, AND a cider haus with wine and cider tastings. We ordered some hard cider ($5) and people-watched before heading into the apple trees. If you want the full experience use this groupon for a deal on the corn maze and cider tastings!
