Things to do in Florence
Florence was the 3rd stop on our honeymoon. Click here to see our full itinerary and read more about the other cities we visited!
Days spent on honeymoon in Florence: 3
Where we stayed: B&B La Dimora degli Angeli
Restaurants to try: Sandwiches at Al Antico Vinao, pasta at La Giostra, pizza at Gusta Pizza, homemade pasta at Yellow Bar
Headed to Florence? You MUST stay at this B&B. And if you’re not headed to Florence, this place will make you want to go! The annex at the B&B La Dimora degli Angeli offers a prime location and overlooks the Piazza della Repubblica and the Duomo. So beautiful! The owners were beyond helpful in giving us tips on where to visit during our stay and even had a bottle of champagne waiting for us on arrival!
Piazza de Michelangelo
If you’re going to do one thing in Florence, take a walk up to the Piazza de Michelangelo to watch the sunset. Buy a bottle of wine and if you’re like us, a pizza, before you go to enjoy on the steps overlooking the city. The laid-back atmosphere, Italian music and best view of Florence make for the perfect spot for honeymooners.
Tuscany
The next day we took a wine tour around Tuscany with Tuscan Wine Tours – Grape Tours. We booked the 8 hour Super Chianti Tuscany wine tour and met so many other great travelers! I would highly recommend a tour to bring you through the winding roads of Tuscany, and this one was fantastic.
Grape Tours took us to Corzano Paterno where we tried wine and cheese pairings and Querceto di Castellina where we tasted Chianti Classico wines while in the midst of cottages from the 1400s. So surreal! For lunch we stopped in Ponzano where we ate at Dario Cecchini’s butcher shop. This is the cutest little Italian village, and the food wasn’t too bad either 🙂
Duomo
If you haven’t realized by now, we don’t tend to buy tickets in advance for touring famous landmarks. We don’t like being tied to a tour time, and you save some cash! So, when it came time to visit the Duomo, we waited in the general free admission line that allows you to walk into the cathedral, around the main level, and back out. The line took about 30 minutes, which was beyond worth it to see the beautiful mosaic floors and Giorgio Vasari’s The Last Judgment.
Accedemia Gallery
With some extra time in Florence, we knew we wanted to make it to a museum, so we decided on the Accedemia to see the Statue of David. This is one time where our decision to not buy tickets in advance didn’t work in our favor. Sigh. I read a few blogs that said to wait until the end of the day for short lines and the possibility of advance tickets still being on sale (you can buy these right across the street). This was definitely not the case for us, so we waited over 2 hours, but made some friends in the process! The statue of David was simply amazing.
Ponte Vecchio
The Ponte Vecchio is such a unique bridge to walk across, but once was enough for us. WAY too many people! We decided we would rather just gaze at it, so on the last night of our honeymoon in Florence we grabbed yet another bottle of wine and went in search of the best spot to drink it. We made our way to the Arno and sat on the Ponte alla Carraia bridge overlooking Ponte Vecchio. One of the many things I love about Italy is that you can drink a bottle of wine wherever, and this bridge was one of the best spots to drink wine, take in the view, and watch the sunset.
