Grand View Lodge winter

A Grand View Lodge winter getaway has everything you need to make the most of the magic of winter. From horse drawn wagon rides to igloos, Grand View Lodge has it all!

Located in Nisswa, Minnesota, Grand View Lodge is about 2 hours north of the Twin Cities. The surrounding area has plenty of shops, restaurants, breweries, and outdoor activities to explore. See my post on Things to do in Nisswa Minnesota here.

We stayed in January of 2021, so many COVID safety measures were in place, meaning that some indoor facilities (like indoor dining and indoor pools/waterparks) were closed. The gym was open with reservations required, and the famous Grand View Lodge breakfast buffet transitioned to a breakfast pickup each morning.

Check the Grand View Lodge website or call for updates on their restrictions and openings. And remember to be safe and respectful of your fellow guests while staying!

Grand View Lodge Winter Getaway

Where we stayed

Minnesota winter

Grand View Lodge has SO MANY different options for lodging depending on how long you’re staying and your group size. We visited with Cole’s family, so we were in a Grand View cabin on the main property with 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a common living/dining space. We were right on the lake which gave us great views of all the ice fishing going on!

Grand View Lodge Ice Rinks

A Grand View Lodge winter stay offers a variety of unique outdoor activities, starting with skating! Two ice rinks, along with a mini kiddie rink, are maintained here in winter. Rentals are usually available, but weren’t during our stay due to COVID, so we brought our own. Some broom ball equipment was available, but we brought our own hockey gear as well. We loved to cozy up by the fire while taking breaks!

Ice Fishing

Fish house rentals are available onsite, but again we brought our own gear just because we had it! We walked right onto the lake from our cabin for some tip up fishing while we played games on the ice! Nothing like a nice day out on the hard water, especially when we played our newly invented game called “skiddy can” for hours haha!

Grand View Lodge Igloos

My highlight of our stay at Grand View Lodge was the heated igloos on site at the Northwoods Pub. It was just so magical! At the time of our stay, igloos were available to reserve only if you were a guest at Grand View Lodge. 6 people are allowed in at a time, a $100 food and beverage minimum is in place, along with a 2 hour time limit. We ordered some drinks and apps, brought some games, and had a great time!

Horse-drawn wagon rides

Included in your stay are horse-drawn wagon rides. Clydesdales are such pretty animals and fun to see up close whether you’re a kid or adult! The rides were available midday on Saturday while we were there, and lasted about 15 minutes. Bring your camera and a tip!

Sledding

Another activity that is fun regardless of age is sledding! A sledding hill is on-site at Grand View Lodge and they also provide a variety of different sleds to use, so no need to bring your own. Also free of charge.

We love the Grand View Lodge winter activities just as much as we love their summer activities. Highly recommend a getaway here to make the most of our Minnesota winters!
