A Boundary Waters Packing List is necessary when heading up north to one of the most beautiful places in Minnesota, if not the country!
We planned our trip through Tuscarora Outfitters, which I highly recommend. They provided our necessities such as camping equipment, cooking equipment, light weight canoes and paddles, and packs. It was amazing to not have to transport this stuff and to have it all ready to go when we got there.
We used Tuscarora’s Equipment and Canoe package. Click the link to see what’s included.
With that said, there were still a few things we needed to bring like food and clothes, along with some more non-necessary things that made our trip a bit more comfortable. See below for a list of what we packed for our 3 day, two night trip for 5 people.

Food
Packing light is key when thinking about what food to purchase for a boundary waters trip. With 5 people total, and three days of being out on the water we packed enough food two breakfasts, three lunches, two dinners, along with snacks and alcohol.
The picture above shows a snapshot of what we actually packed. We also planned to catch some fish and brought some batter to fry it in (flour, lowry seasoning, oil). For alcohol, we packed wine bags. Things I would definitely recommend packing that you can find at your local grocery store are rice/pasta sides, tortillas (instead of bread if you do sandwiches the first day), instant oatmeal for breakfast, and dry salami for snacks or wraps.
Clothes
Some boundary water trips can be long, but being ours was only a few days, minimal clothes was necessary. For myself, I brought two pairs of shorts, one tank top, two t-shirts, one long sleeve, one sweatshirt, leggings, wool socks, and a swim suit. I wore my Chaco sandals and also brought hiking boots, but wish I wouldn’t have as we didn’t have an intense enough portage to use them.
