Every year our college friends get together for a group ski trip and it’s one of our favorite traditions. This year, we stayed in Big Sky Montana and we skied for 3 days in Big Sky and the surrounding area.
We absolutely LOVE Montana skiing, so for other ideas, click here for our guides to Whitefish MT and Fernie BC! (Yes, I’m aware Fernie is in Canada, but it’s close enough!)
How we got there
When you visit Big Sky Montana, the closest airport is in Bozeman which is a little over an hour from Big Sky when you take into account the snowy winter roads. I would recommend flying into Bozeman and then renting a car so you’re able to explore on your own. If you would rather shuttle I recommend Karst Stage. We took this to the airport on our last day it was the cheapest and most convenient shuttle we could find.
Where we stayed
We stayed at a friend’s place, but good news for you, you can stay there too! We had 8 total people staying in the condo, so it was perfect for a group of friends and it was only 8 minutes away from Big Sky Resort. The condo is located in a great area and even had a private hot tub indoors, or a shared hot tub outside that we took full advantage of!
Skiing Bridger Bowl
Being we needed to pick another friend up at the airport in Bozeman, we decided to ski Bridger Bowl for our first day. Fun fact – Bridger Bowl is a non-profit mountain so lift tickets are much cheaper than others in the area! Definitely a good option if you’re on a budget. The snow was a bit firm while we were there, but we still had a great time exploring the mountain and it’s technical terrain.
Map Brewing
After our ski day at Bridger, we drove over to Map Brewing to try some local beer and eat dinner. We worked up an appetite while skiing so I totally forgot to get photos of our food, but the majority of our group ordered burgers and pulled pork – both were amazing!
Blue Moon Bakery
Back in Big Sky, we fueled up at Blue Moon Bakery before we hit the slopes on day 2. The bagels and breakfast sandwiches are out of this world. Definitely stop by for some breakfast and coffee!
Skiing Big Sky Montana
Big Sky Montana is amazingly huge and has terrain for any level of skier. I would recommend it for anyone who likes variety and alpine skiing – we only did a few runs twice and we skied Big Sky for two full days! We loved the bowl, the Lone Peak Tram, and taking rests at the adorable yurt on the side of the mountain! Full details of our 2 days skiing Big Sky will be up tomorrow 🙂
Beehive Basin Brewery
Are you seeing a theme here? Beer and skiing go so well together! We stopped at Beehive Basin Brewery for a few rounds after our second day of skiing and loved it. It’s definitely the place to be after a day on the mountain, but the lively atmosphere was just what we needed. The Working Guys Cream Ale was my favorite!
Lotus Pad
Lotus Pad was some of the best Thai food we’ve ever had. It’s a local and visitor favorite, so it gets busy. If you have a big group make sure to call ahead! Cole and I shared the pad Thai and the yellow curry. We were basically licking the bowls once we got to the bottom – we couldn’t get enough!
The Brothel
I know, I know, this name sounds sketchy. I promise it isn’t! We spent most nights hanging out in our cabin playing games, but on our last night we stopped by the Brothel for a few beers and this quirky spot was so fun! Make sure to take a seat on the old ski lift in the back corner and check out their bike shop in the back!
Keep your eye out for all the details of skiing Big Sky coming tomorrow. Happy skiing!
I’ll be going with a group of friends to Big Sky hopefully this January! This article is perfect for us because we think skiing and beer go perfectly together also. 🙂 Any tips on things to do in the area other than ski? Some in the group aren’t skiers or boarders.
Fun!! I’m so jealous! All we really did was ski, but there were local outfitters there where you could rent cross country skis and snowshoes, I would recommend doing that!
