Big Sky Montana Ski Guide

Big Sky Ski Weekend Itinerary

Big Sky Montana is amazingly huge and has terrain for any level of skier (or boarder). I would recommend it for anyone who likes variety and alpine skiing – we only did a few runs twice and we skied Big Sky for two full days!

Here’s a recap of our favorite runs (and other stops) that we were guided to by our friend who has skied Big Sky for 15 years! Keep in mind that we like to challenge ourselves when we ski – and I encourage you to do the same! Click here for a map of the mountain to follow along.

Andesite Mountain

Start your day on Andesite Mountain and take the Ramcharger 8 lift from the mountain village up to the top. This lift is SO LUXURIOUS! Heated seats and it fits 8 people! At the top, you can take a variety of runs down from greens to blacks. We started with Silver Knife for a more difficult blue to warm up.

The Bowl

When you’re back at the base, take the Swift Current lift up where you can either take a few more easy runs down to the base, stop at the Black Kettle Burrito shack, or make your way over to the Powder Seeker lift to ski the bowl. Bowls used to intimidate me but they are so fun! Especially in fresh snow. When you get off the lift take the Turkey Traverse to The Bowl or Blackrock Gully for some amazing skiing.

Lone Peak Tram

After a few runs in the bowl, we wanted to ski from the very top of Lone Mountain. To do this, take the Powder Seeker back up and then ski over to the Lone Peak Tram to go all the way up! The tram fits 15 people and we probably waited for a half hour on a Thursday afternoon, but heard that it can take way longer. If you don’t want to wait in line, make your way there first thing in the morning! Once we took the tram through the clouds we took the Liberty Bowl (the easiest way down) to Screaming Left.

Shedhorn Grill

At the bottom of Screaming Left you’ll find the cutest yurt halfway down the mountain called Shedhorn Grill. We stopped here for a nice long break to drink some beer and eat a late lunch. The sun was shining so we sat out on the deck and and were surrounded by smells of outdoor winter grilling and the wood burning fireplace that heated the yurt. So dreamy and cozy! Afterwards we skied to the bottom of the Shedhorn lift and took the Duck Walk back to the other side of the mountain where we skied back down to Mountain Village to end our day.

South Face

We started day 2 similar to day 1 but quickly made our way over to the South Face to ski the trees. We took the Swift Current lift from the Mountain Village and made our way to the bottom of the Shedhorn 4 lift. From here we spent most of our day skiing the trees around the Shedhorn lift and the Dakota lift. We had a blast in this area! Keep in mind that the trees are ungroomed, so always ski with a buddy!

Six Shooter lift

After playing around in the trees all day we wanted even more, so we took the long trek to the opposite side of the mountain to explore the area around the Six Shooter lift. We ran into some challenging but fun spots in this area, but it was much busier than the South Face of the mountain.

Madison Village

We ended our last day in Madison Village where we grabbed some pizza and beer at Headwaters Grille. We didn’t take a break this day so we were STARVING by the time we finally sat down!
