Habachklause Review: The Family Farm Resort in Austria That Planned Our Whole Trip

An all-inclusive family resort in Austria on a real working farm? YES, and it’s the whole reason we planned our trip! Note that I am a travel writer and often get paid for reviews like this Habachklause review, but we paid for this resort and stayed here on our own accord!

Staying at Habachklause Family Resort was a dream of mine for so long. I found it while searching for summer trips with kids, and it sent me down a rabbit hole of Austria’s amazing family hotels. I kept coming back to this one, and it beat every expectation!

We spent five nights here in mid-August with our two kids, ages 2 and 5, as part of our 14-day Austria and Germany itinerary with little kids. In this Habachklause review, I’m sharing everything you need to know before you book, from the food, to the kids club, spa, pools, rooms, and more.

Book Habachklause here! It’s a family-run hotel, and there’s only 40 rooms, so book early!

Where is Habachklause? (And why the location is perfect)

Habachklause sits in the little village of Bramberg am Wildkogel in Austria’s Salzburg region, surrounded by mountains, gondolas, hiking trails and gorgeous alpine lakes. Basically, kid-friendly adventures in every direction.

Here is how we structured each day while staying here:

  • Morning: one outing a day, like a gondola ride, an easy hike or a lake day
  • Afternoon: back to the resort
  • Rest of the day: swimming, kids club, spa time and a long dinner

The staff will help you plan hikes and day trips nearby. We ventured a little farther than most guests, and every single outing was worth it. Here’s what we did from Habachklause:

  • Saalbach: Montelino’s Adventure Trail, plus lunch at Panorama-Alm
  • Zell am See: a beach club day and a rental boat on the lake
  • Kaprun: hiking the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge up to the Klammsee
  • Krimml: walking to the base of the Krimml Waterfalls

I break down each of these day trips in our full Austria and Germany itinerary!

All-inclusive, farm-to-table food

I never realized how amazing it would be to just…not think about food or where we would eat each night while traveling. When you’re in a new country, driving around and wrangling kids all day, this is a game changer.

Here’s what a day of eating looks like:

  • Breakfast buffet every morning
  • Lunch buffet and snacks in the afternoon (perfect after a morning outing)
  • Dinner: an included 5-course meal, with the option to upgrade to an elevated 7-course experience

The best part? Habachklause is an actual working farm. Most of the food comes straight from its own livestock and gardens, and the rest comes from local vendors.

The grown-up dinners are next level and the menu changes daily: salad, soup, a main course and dessert, plus a buffet of cheeses, fruit and more. The best part is that the kids have their own buffet, so there’s zero waiting on kids’ meals. We would grab them a plate right when we got to the restaurant while we enjoyed a glass of wine. And there’s always ice cream which was of course the favorite.

And since there are kids everywhere, you never feel bad about a dinnertime meltdown. Everyone’s in the same boat.

The kids club (included!)

The kids club is included in your stay, with a Baby Club for little ones under 3 and a Kids Club for ages 3 and up. And it’s SO cute.

They have activities planned all day long: crafts, art, daily trips outside to the playground, little walks around the property and visits to the farm animals. There’s also an incredible indoor playground with a slide that drops into an under-the-sea ball pit. Seriously, everything here is adorable.

Our daughter absolutely loved it. She made little friends from all over the world, and it didn’t matter one bit that they didn’t speak the same language. The kids club also leads parades through the dining room during dinner and throws mini dance parties, which she thought was the coolest thing ever.

Our routine: we’d drop the kids at kids club after our daily outing, then head to the spa. Which brings me to my next topic!

The adults-only spa (and a family spa, too)

The adults-only spa was my happy place. You don’t need an appointment to use it, so you can pop in any time. It has:

  • A sauna
  • A foam room (so unique, I’d never seen one before!)
  • A huge rooftop hot tub overlooking the mountains
  • Relaxation lounges with tea and little snacks

You can also book treatments. I got a massage, and it was amazing. I just booked a few days beforehand at reception.

There’s also a family spa, where you can relax together with your kids. They even offer kid-friendly treatments (like chocolate massages).

The outdoor playground is next level

Playgrounds in Austria and Germany are already incredible, but this one is on another level, and it’s right outside your door. It’s where everyone ends up and we met so many great people here!

Kids can climb up to a platform and pull themselves across in a little pulley wagon, dig in the rocks with real equipment, fly down fun slides and splash around a wade-in pool with little huts and water play. I’d never seen half of these things anywhere else.

Heads up: watch out for bees. We visited in mid-August, and there were a lot of them buzzing around. Honestly, there are EVERYWHERE you go in this region, not just at this resort. You can get drinks delivered to the playground, but I’d skip it because it seemed to attract more. Our daughter and I got stung, and the staff were so great. They helped her put an onion on it to feel better, and she still talks about how silly that was!

Farm animals and pony rides

Staying on a real working farm is just so cool. You’ll find chickens, goats, pigs, horses and plenty more wandering around, and there’s a set time every day when kids can help feed them. They also offer pony rides during the day.

The pools: warm, shallow and made for families

There are multiple pools, and every single one is designed with families in mind.

  • Indoor pool: the water is warm (huge win with little kids), and in the corner there’s a lounge bench where parents can lie back and turn on the bubbles, like a hot tub, while the kids play right next to them. I’d never seen anything like it!
  • Little kids’ splash area: a shallow, warm indoor spot with fun slides and things to crawl around in. My kids loved this one most.
  • Outdoor relaxation pool: accessed from the family spa and surrounded by cute Bavarian-style buildings. Gorgeous.
  • Outdoor wading pool: the water play area by the playground.

Family rooms with a separate kids’ room

The rooms are built for families, and ours wasn’t even one of the fancy ones. We had our own room, a bathroom, a balcony and a separate kids’ room. Our 5-year-old got the bed, and the crib for our 2-year-old was already set up when we arrived.

This setup is everything. The kids go to bed, and you can still stay up, chat and enjoy the balcony. Note: Most rooms do not have air conditioning. This is very common in this region but took some getting used to for us Americans! We asked for a few fans at reception, but it would usually cool down enough at night to be comfortable.

Free rentals: bikes, strollers and baby carriers

This one is a total sleeper hit. Habachklause lends out gear for free:

  • Bikes: lots of families ride into town or over to a gondola
  • Strollers and baby carriers: really good quality that we would take on our daily adventures

We didn’t bring a stroller or carrier on this trip, and with all the hiking and walking we did, being able to grab one on the way out the door made our days so much easier. One less thing to pack!

Tips for staying at Habachklause

01. Plan one outing each morning. Head out after breakfast, be back by afternoon, and spend the rest of the day at the resort. It’s the perfect balance!

02. Leave the stroller at home. Strollers and baby carriers are free to borrow, so that’s one less thing to haul across the ocean.

03. Use kids club for spa time. Drop the kids after your outing and go enjoy that rooftop hot tub. You deserve it!

My Habachklause review: is it worth it with little kids?

If you want my Habachklause review in one sentence: if you have little kids, 100% yes! Between the included food, kids club, spa access and gear rentals, it takes almost all the stress out of traveling abroad with kids. It’s best for families with babies up to about age 8 or so. We spent our mornings exploring Austria and our afternoons actually relaxing, which, as any parent knows, is basically unheard of.

It’s the reason we planned our whole trip, and now no other resort will live up to it!
