Green Heron Bed and Breakfast
I’ve never stayed at a traditional B&B before, and if I ever stay at one again, I don’t think it will ever live up to this experience.
The Green Heron Bed and Breakfast is located on Pokegama Lake in Grand Rapids MN. We stayed with my family for 3 nights, and with two guest rooms available, we had this cozy B&B all to ourselves!
So, why stay here on your next trip up north?
1. Atmosphere
The old European-style house is unexpected but so charming. From the lake-view rooms to the cozy living room to the library (yes, a library!) this place truly gives you an escape. When the weather decided to rain for a bit, we gladly packed up our beach gear and headed inside for a quick game of scrabble.
The beach itself is a reason to stay at the Green Heron bed and breakfast. We spent every morning here drinking coffee and every afternoon soaking in the gorgeous views of Pokegama Lake. My dad loved watching the neighbor’s plane take off and land 🙂
2. Breakfast
I know this is called a “bed and breakfast” but I was not prepared for the amazing breakfast we were served each day. The owners were accommodating to dietary restrictions, and served an array of locally-sourced, homemade foods. This included rhubarb muffins made with rhubarb grown in the backyard, yoghurt parfaits topped with homemade maple syrup, and wild rice omelets from self-harvested wild rice just down the road. I mean, seriously, does it get any better??
It was so fun to hear the owners’ stories of how they make and harvest the different ingredients, especially the wild rice!
3. Lake activities
There’s so much to do at the Green Heron bed and breakfast that you would never have to leave! We loved the beach, but also had a great time exploring the shores by paddle board, kayak, canoe, and paddle boat! If you’re up for the challenge, their dog, Jake, might just decide to come along for a ride!
My sister and Cole hit up the tennis court everyday, and we even got a few games of family pickle ball in! (Thanks for the lessons, sis)
4. Happy hour
As if our days weren’t perfect enough, the owners offered a happy hour every day at 5:00. Overlooking the lake on the gorgeously landscaped patio, we sipped beer and wine along with a variety of instagram-worthy appetizers (my favorite kind of appetizers). We spent this time chatting with the owners, talking about our day, and planning our activities for the rest of the night.
5. Pokegama Lake
Pokegama lake was at the center of this vacation. It has the clearest water and is actually a reservoir of the Mississippi River.
We ended each night with a bonfire right by the lake, and on our last night, the owners took us out on an electric boat from Symphony Boat Company. This was such a treat! We watched the sunset in the handmade, wooden boat, which reminded me of a boat you would see driving down the canals in Venice – so fun!
Bonus: Tennis court
